Town square project under way

Sugar Land’s Town Square project is moving forward, as City Council has entered into a public-private partnership with Stormont Hospitality Group and Sugarland Properties, Inc. to develop Fort Bend County's first full-service hotel as the centerpiece of Town Square. The 300-room Sugar Land Marriott Hotel will be located within a nine-story building.

With construction expected to begin in early 2002 on the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square, the City of Sugar Land sold bonds for its portion of the hotel project, which is the 60,000 square foot Sugar Land Conference Center and 360 spaces of a 525-space parking garage that adjoin the hotel.  The issuance of $19 million in debt for these two facilities was planned for and budgeted in this year’s City budget.  The bonds fund $18 million toward design/construction and $900,000 in issuance costs and debt service reserves.

The two-story conference center will adjoin the hotel via an interior, landscaped courtyard and also be accessible by a separate, covered entrance. The conference center's 26,500 square feet of meeting space will include a 15,500-square-foot ballroom which is among Houston's largest, eight breakout/meeting rooms, a business center, boardroom, 184-seat restaurant and lounge, gourmet coffee shop and a health facility including an outdoor swimming pool and landscaped deck.

The Sugar Land Marriot Hotel is an important component of the overall Town Square project, which will include a mix of retail, office and residential space.  When completed, the facility will include:

What is Town Square?

Town Square is a 32-acre mixed-use development that will serve as a new downtown for greater Fort Bend County.  The development will represent the leading concept in urban design, combining the most appealing elements of a traditional downtown business district with the classic components of a walk able main street.

Located at the intersection of U.S. 59 and State Highway 6, Town Square will contain 200,000 square feet of upscale Main Street retail topped by approximately 750,000 square feet of Class A office space along with the 300-room full-service Sugar Land Marriott Town Square, Sugar Land Conference Center and a new Sugar Land City Hall.

Town Square will offer a number of benefits, including creating a focal point and identity for the City, addressing the need for first class hotel and meeting space and supporting the City’s continuing economic development.
